Jewellery robber shoots man dead at Plaisance

A THIRTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD man was shot dead by a lone gunman Monday night, at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.

Dead: Marlon Britton

Marlon Britton, a building contractor and father of one, was also relieved of his gold jewellery by the lone gunman who fired at him as he was leaving a Prince William Street yard.

The victim, who lived a short distance away in the same street, was rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) shortly after 21:30 h but died, about two hours later, from the single bullet wound to his right temple.

At the time of his death, the wounded man was being stabilised in preparation for undergoing emergency surgery.

His sister, Stoyann Crandon, tearfully recalling the tragic circumstances yesterday, told the Guyana Chronicle that, around 22:00 h, family members were at home watching television when they received a telephone call, requesting that they report to the GPH immediately, because Britton had suffered gunshot injury and was being treated.

Weeping as she speaks with the Press – Britton’s 2-year-old daughter, Akeisha.

She said, together with Desiree Lewis, mother of his 12-year-old daughter, Akeisha, they hurried to the hospital and found him in critical condition, with doctors and support staff attending him but to no avail.

Crandon said the information received indicated that her brother had just left the home of a friend when he was attacked by the shooter, who took away his gold chain, two gold wristbands, his cellular phone and wallet containing money.

A scuffle ensued between Britton and the robber who killed him and fled.

Occupants of the house where he had been, heard the gunfire and ran outside where they found Britton slumped to the ground, bleeding from a gaping hole in his head.

News of his death sent family members hysterical and agonising wails erupted at the hospital, even after the body had been taken to the morgue.

Lamenting her father’s passing, his daughter, Akeisha said he had promised to return home and join them to watch wrestling on television.

The girl also said they had made great plans for Father’s Day but those have now been dashed.

Britton is survived, as well, by his parents, Ezee Britton and Desiree Thomas, three brothers, another sister and other relatives.

A post mortem examination is to be performed on the corpse of the deceased today, as Police are continuing their hunt for the killer.
