The toddler, Fabian Gomes, of Long Creek, was struck down by a car at about 07:30h while on his way to school with his brothers and sisters.
Reports are that Gomes, the youngest of six children, was standing on the Highway with his siblings when he ran across the road and was hit by the vehicle.
Speaking with this newspaper yesterday, the child’s father, Gavin Gomes, said he received the news while at work, some miles away from his home. When he arrived at the scene, his son was already dead.
The child was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
He stated that his reputed wife, Abiola Smith, would usually see the children off to the head of the roadway where they would wait for a school bus to transport them to the Kuru Kururu College, also on the Linden Soesdyke Highway.
However, yesterday morning the mother had left the children at home alone to go to work and then come back to see them off to school.
Police in a statement yesterday said that the matter is being investigated and the driver of the vehicle is in police custody, assisting with investigations. (Delana Isles)
