North Ruimveldt cart off $500 000 and trophy in clean sweep

A $500 000 cash prize, another year’s worth of bragging rights and of course the instinctive drive to win fuelled North Ruimveldt’s (N/Ruimveldt) rampage of Wortmanville/Werk-en-Rust (W/W) in game two of the Inter-Ward basketball finals on Sunday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH).

N/Ruimvedlt’s intentions were clear from the start as they did not falter once and held on to a rather extensive lead for the entire game which ended with a final score of 85-59.

With 1 min 6 secs left in the 2nd quarter N/Ruimveldt had a 20-point command of the scoreboard (44-24).

Their domineering attitude grew as the game progressed and their lead increased with the closing of every quarter from an 8-point lead in the first quarter to a 19-point lead in the second to close out the first half well on their way to the championship.

About 5 mins into the fourth quarter W/W fans began to exit the CASH in throngs when they realised the games’ eminent outcome.

Coming away with a 25-point high score in game one, N/Ruimveldt’s Andrew Ifill one-upped himself to score a game-high 26 points during Sunday night’s contest and also stood his ground defensively as he executed 5 steals, 2 blocks and 5 defensive rebounds.

Ryan Stephney reinforced N/Ruimveldt’s belligerent offence with his 15 points while teammate Damien Liverpool also had his say with 11 points.

W/W captain Naylon Loncke was flustered by a constant double-teamed defence but managed a 12-point game total which was matched by teammate Aubrey Smith.

With dampened spirits and exhaustion taking its toll W/W suffered through an agonising second half scoring a measly 22 points to N/Ruimveldt’s 39. In the battle for third place earlier in the night Charlestown/Albouystown gave South Ruimveldt the boot to take the game by three points. W/W took away $300 000 for being runners-up.
