IT’s regrettable that the hosting of CARIFESTA XI, the most prominent, artistic festival within CARICOM has become a debatable subject.
Again Bahamas has opted out of the hosting, this time on account of the global financial crisis. So who then, is going to host this cultural fest? As far as I know, every country is experiencing financial constraints; that’s why it’s called a global financial crisis.
After Bahamas indicated its inability to host CARIFESTA X last year, Guyana, which is so often referred to as “a very poor country” took up the challenge and pulled it off despite the odds.
Why is it then that the Bahamas, which is endowed with a lot more resources than Guyana, is again declining from shouldering this responsibility?
When President Bharrat Jagdeo had initially announced that Guyana would be the host of CARIFESTA X, a lot of tongues wagged criticisms at his decision. In the end however, a lot of revenue was generated, Guyanese were showcased, and Guyana received its due recognition for its efforts.
The hosting of a massive event such as CARIFESTA should be a matter of pride, as it was in Guyana and President Jagdeo should be lauded for acknowledging the honour it was to host CARIFESTA in land that had given it birth.
It is very disappointing that the Bahamas has now declined the hosting of this prestigious festival twice. Moreover, this reluctance is not a display of true CARICOM partnership.
