High Court grants Colin Mack bail

ENTERTAINMENT promoter Colin Mack, 38, who was remanded to prison last week, on being committed to stand jury trial for rape, was granted bail yesterday by Acting Chief Justice Ian Chang.

The judge, on an application by Defence Counsel Glen Hanoman, set surety at $250,000 for the accused pre-trial freedom.

The grant had been refused by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, who signed the committal order for Mack at the conclusion of the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the charge on June 5.

Hanoman had said, then, that given the current trend, it is likely that the High Court trial could take at least three years to be called and the (PI) had left Mack financially drained.

But the magistrate upheld an objection by Police Inspector Denise Griffith, who had expressed fear that the accused will not likely attend his trial.

Mack is charged with committing the offence on a 19-year-old last April 12. (Nathalene DeFreitas)
