Removal of Cuba’s OAS suspension a new chapter in hemispheric relations

THE Government of Guyana described the lifting of the 47 year-old suspension of Cuba from the Organisation of American States (OAS), as a new chapter in hemispheric relations.

According to a release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the vote taken by the 39th General Assembly of the OAS on June 3, 2009 has paved the way for the re-integration of Cuba into the Councils of the Hemisphere.

It added that the Government of Guyana has consistently held the position that Cuba should not be isolated in the region and remains fully supportive of the process of Cuba’s eventual readmission if it wishes to return to the OAS.

The 34 OAS member states during a meeting in Honduras unanimously voted to cancel the 1962 decision that barred Cuba from membership to the organisation.
