Boxers sign contracts for June 27 `explosion’

THREE of Guyana’s most talented young boxers will aim to put on `gutsy’ performances to yield definitive glory on June 27 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) when they settle all accounts on the ‘Final Execution’ card when the boxers signed their contracts at the Abdool & Abdool Insurance Brokers office.

The card sanctioned by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) and sponsored by S&S Promotions will feature Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen against journeyman Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes in the main event of the evening and Guyana’s best bantamweights’ world-rated Leon ‘Hurry Up’ Moore challenging the potential world champion Dexter Marques.

Twenty-three-year-old southpaw Allen, who has a clean record with nine fights with a knockout percentage of 55.56 last fought Jonathan Nelson in 2007 in St Lucia. He was scheduled to fight Howard ‘the Battersea Bomber’ Eastman for the vacant super middleweight title last April but Eastman was arrested for having cannabis sativa on his person and the fight did not materialise.

‘The Lion’ Gilkes, whose journeyman record stands at 4 wins, 10 losses and 3 draws, lost to Eastman for the middleweight title of Guyana and will have to dig deep into his boxing bag of tricks to beat the elusive Allen in the 168-pound weight division. Judging from Gilkes’ style of fighting, it will be open season at the shooting range for the sharp Allen.

In the main supporting bout, Moore, coming off a third round stoppage of Mark ‘The Killer’ Murray on the ‘Foreign Invasion II’ card in Linden held on May 30, improved his record to 23 wins and two losses from 25 fights.

His two blemishes came from the hands of Irene Pacheo (split decision) in a title bout in Columbia and a majority decision against Timur Shailezov in Kyrgyztan.

For quite sometime a storm was brewing between Marques and Moore with the exchanging of words to challenge each other. After Marques’ (4 fights) clinical destruction of Paul Lewis in April he issued a challenge to Moore who stated that he is willing to fight anybody.

Meanwhile, the 42-year-old Debbie Tyson, after a stunning display in her debut fight, will fight Sharon Ward; Shelly Gibson will go up against the trash-talking Pauline London and promoters are yet to find an opponent for Kwesi Jones.
