Farfan and Mendes hockey …
THE hockey section of the Georgetown Cricket Club is unbeaten after playing two back-to-back matches in the 2009 Farfan and Mendes Division One League.
On Friday last the Bourda boys, playing at home, edged Old Fort by a 2-1 margin, while on Monday, they were held to a 2-2 draw by defending champions Hikers at the same venue.
The two matches are the only two to be played to date in this year’s tournament. The win and the draw mean that GCC have progressed to four points, three for the win against Old Fort and one from Monday’s drawn game. Hikers earned one point for the draw while Old Fort are pointless.
Kevin Spencer had netted a double for the Bourda team last Friday, while Aderemi Simon responded for Old Fort.
On Monday, however, Devin Hooper opened the scoring in the 23rd minute to give GCC a 1-0 lead after he intercepted a clearance, got control of the ball and dribbled a defender before slotting it into Hikers’ goal.
The 1-0 lead was maintained until the interval (30th minute), but three minutes into the second session Robert France levelled the score 1-1 for Hikers after receiving a pass from the left flank and evaded two defenders before tucking the ball into the opposition’s goal.
After a 1-1 deadlock, Shaquille Assanah sent Hikers into the lead with a 56th minute goal.
The ball had rebounded off GCC’s custodian Michael Xavier and Assamah latched on to it and finished well to give his team a 2-1 lead which was maintained until the 57th minute of the shortened game, as Alan Fernandes worked his way into Hikers’ `D’ and registered his first goal of the tournament.
Three minutes (60th) later the final whistle sounded.
The competition will continue on Friday at the same venue with Hikers coming up against Old Fort from 16:45h.
