Brummel to deal with 911 complaints internally

TWO top Police officers have responded differently to complaints about the dissatisfaction with the 911 emergency service.

Many people, including individuals who prefer to remain anonymous, complained recently that they got no response after calling the number when in dire need of Police help.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud acknowledged there were, indeed, issues surrounding this matter but said Commander ‘A’ Division, Assistant Commissioner Leroy Brummel was the most appropriate person to comment.

The latter said yesterday he was unaware that a problem exists in view of the fact that there are 911 numbers in all Police divisions countrywide.

He said, however, he has already advised his officers to properly monitor the telephones.

Asked specifically about the telephones being unanswered, he said he would have to deal with it internally.

Among the latest complainants were Ms. Sonia Lampley, of Middle Road, La Penitence, Georgetown, who said she was robbed at gunpoint last week by a man who broke into her house during early morning hours.

The woman, 28, said she awakened and saw the intruder looking at her from a ledge in her bedroom.

She said she reached for the telephone and dialed 911 but the number “kept ringing out.”

After her 20 minutes ordeal, still traumatised, she called Ruimveldt Police Station but was told no ranks were available to attend her report.

Lampley said the person who answered her promised to send someone as soon as possible but no one went to her.

A similar concern was raised by a South Ruimveldt resident, Mrs. Elizabeth Hines, who said her husband called 911 but to no avail, after he reported that a woman had been dragged out of her motor car and was being beaten by a man on the street.

Hines said the victim was screaming as she was dealt blows but no assistance was secured through 911.
