I recently visited the Guyana Legal Aid Clinic which is situated in the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) compound, Anna Regina, Essequibo Coast to seek legal advice from Attorney-at-Law Mr. Sunil Scarce LLB.
Mr. Editor, to my surprise and dismay, as I am confined to a wheelchair, there was no proper passage way leading to that office for the sick and disabled, although hundreds of people would visit that place on a weekly basis. I was quite annoyed, seeing that the Offices of the Regional Chairman and the Regional Executive Officer are just a stone’s throw away and nothing is being done to upgrade that passageway.
The Legal Aid Clinic and the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security are government facilities and it is often frequented by government officials and members of the public. This compound is also houses several government offices. In addition, most people are dependent on constant and adequate service being provided at these offices. I was informed by the Officer of Human Services and Social Security that for the longest while, since the last flood there is a drain across the passageway where the old, sick and disabled have to pass.
All these factors have contributed to difficulty especially people moving on wheelchairs to collect their pension books or seeking legal advice. The most obvious solution to the problem I suggested was to pitch the 25 rods of passageway.
I therefore feel it is very important that I highlight this issue and hope that someone in authority will act urgently. Many people are suffering as a result of this neglect.
