I refer to two letters published in Kaieteur News on May 26, by Mr. Norris Witter and Rev. Gideon Cecil with the captions “Nothing to celebrate on independence anniversary” and “What have we achieved?” respectively.
How is it that these two gentlemen remain completely oblivious to the extent of nation building and progress that this country has seen from 1966 to 2009? Do they really live in Guyana? Are there really nothing to appreciate and no reason to celebrate our independent status?
I really don’t know how people could make such erroneous statements and the fact that they get publication is utterly unethical.
One faulty, incorrect impression and all of the government’s struggles and efforts to make improvements in every facet of the lives of Guyanese are blasted.
I urge Mr. Witter and Rev. Cecil to travel the length and breadth of this country to get acquainted with the developments that have occurred over the years and are still ongoing. Moreover, I urge the persons who may have read these letters not to get misconstrued by such defective and ill-judged declarations.
It’s our 43rd anniversary as a liberated nation for God’s sake! And of course there is more that we aspire and will work towards. But a true Guyanese would know that we are indeed a thriving nation and that is reason enough for all of us to celebrate.
