POLICE in the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago have confirmed only three persons as being in their custody up to press time yesterday, who are suspected to have been involved in the murders of the two Guyanese nationals there.
Reports emanating out of the Caribbean island indicate that the cops, while confirming the arrest, have not charged the trio as yet and are tight-lipped on other details surrounding the case.
The men were reportedly picked up sometime between Tuesday evening and Wednesday by the Southern Homicide Department and are assisting with police investigations. Up to press time the men were not charged.
Reports are that the investigation is focused in the area of Caroni in Central Trinidad, around where the bodies of Vinod Doobay 22, and Narad Sukhoo, 28, were found in Felicity, and the southern part of the island.
Unconfirmed reports are that one of the men taken into custody is a businessman, and a source had earlier revealed to this newspaper that the man was the one who ordered a hit on the two slain men.
Although not confirmed by police in Trinidad, reports are that the shooting might have stemmed from the businessman accusing Doobay and Sukhoo of stealing TT$800.
The duo was accused of stealing the money from the home of the man, and reports from Trinidad are that two other workers who were also fingered in the theft of the money were questioned and beaten by associates of the businessman.
The trio will appear in court tomorrow, sources said.
The bodies of Doobay and Sukhoo, both of whom were shot once to the back of the head, were found submerged in a river at an abandoned landfill in Felicity, Chaguanas, last Sunday morning.
Reports are that the men were snatched from their place of employment, a construction site, not too far from their home in St Augustine, in the presence of other workers.
Guyana Honorary Consul in Trinidad and Tobago, Eric Ross, in a telephone interview with the Guyana Chronicle yesterday, confirmed that Sukhoo, a Hindu, was cremated in the island yesterday.
Ross said that the mother of the murdered man was inconsolable at the ceremony, adding that the Doobay’s body is being flown back to Guyana for burial.
He added that the Consul office is assisting Doobay’s relatives with the arrangements for his body to be transported here.
