Jailed prisoner claims marijuana improves birds whistle

DREADLOCKED Winston Hetymeyer was sentenced to three years imprisonment, last Friday, after he admitted having 36 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) in his possession.

Magistrate Geeta Chandan Persid Edmond, before whom the prisoner pleaded guilty and said he used the narcotic to feed his birds’, was also fined $10,000 with the alternative of 20 more days in prison.

Suffering from a cataract in one eye, the 43-year-old convict, a father of three, told the New Amsterdam Court, in Berbice, the marijuana and ‘Trill’ brand seeds improved his birds whistle.

Police Inspector Satrohan Dyanaram, prosecuting, said, on May 15, Hetymeyer, of Smythfield, New Amsterdam, was approached by ranks on mobile patrol after he was seen acting in a suspicious manner.

The Prosecutor said a search of the black plastic bag the convict was carrying yielded leaves, seeds and stems of the illegal plant.
