Amidst hope at Santa Rosa…
THREE more female teenagers took sick with the mystery illness over last weekend, as residents of Santa Rosa in Moruka, North West District, hoped it would end soon.
Since the medically undiagnosed ailment resurfaced in February, after it first struck three years ago, 67 victims, between the ages of 13 and 18, have been afflicted.
Tests done by health personnel were unsuccessful in ascertaining the cause, with no obvious genetic or other links and long-term physical consequences.
Santa Rosa Toshoa Marco De Souza admitted that the incidence has caused a commotion, his granddaughter, Sarah De Souza being a victim who has recovered.
He noted that, with the latest three attacks, the occurrences have reduced in number.
One of the trio, was 15-year-old Mollyann La Rose, who became ill around 22:00h on Friday while sleeping at the nearby home of a friend and, once more, on Saturday, about 19:00h in her own home.
She told the Guyana Chronicle she remembers going to the friend’s house but cannot recall how she fell ill or how, with the aid of her family, she returned to her home.
However, she said, while asleep, she dreamt she saw people in a dark place, like a tunnel preventing her from leaving by shutting a door.
“I had to fight to get out and, when I did, my mother and some other people were standing over me,” the girl recalled.
Her mother, Graciann La Rose said, when her daughter was attacked, a pastor was called immediately to pray for her and only then was she becalmed.
In an interview with this newspaper last week Tuesday, her mother had said the girl not attending school because of the sickness and Minister within the Ministry of Education, Dr Desrey Fox accepted that protective parents would want to keep them at home in such circumstances.
Knowing that the children still have to continue their education, the Minister pledged that the Ministry will support the community in whatever ways necessary.
