Alpha, Tigers register GFA/Cellink Plus victories

DEFENDING champions of the Georgetown Football Association/Cellink Plus Premier League, Alpha United, registered a 4-0 win over Sunburst Camptown while BK International Western Tigers brushed aside Flamingo 3-0, when play in the competition continued on Sunday evening at the Tucville ground with a double-header.

In the feature match, Dwight Peters recorded a double for Alpha in the 26th and 88th minutes while Quincy Madramootoo slotted one home in the 27th minute and the other came from a defence error.

In the opening game, Western Tigers registered all three of their goals within 10 minutes of the second session after a goalless first half.

Devon Millington netted a double in the 62nd and 68th minutes while Nedd Fraser added one in the 72nd minute.

The win for the defending champions Alpha United ensures they regain the lead in the points table with nine points from three matches in the eight-team competition.

Camptown fought desperately to reduce the 2-0 half-time lead but found their opponents’ defence too difficult to penetrate, along with some outstanding goalkeeping by Alpha’s custodian Ronson Williams.

A well-struck right foot free kick from approximately 25 metres out deflected off a Camptown defender and sent their custodian Richie Richards in the wrong direction.

Camptown were further burdened when Troy Prescod received marching orders (red card) from referee Otis James in the 86th minute and two minutes later, Peters completed his double, racing down the flank unchallenged and rounded a hesitant  Richards to slot home his well-placed shot.

Earlier in the evening, Western Tigers and Flamingo were tied 0-0 at the interval but the second session exploded and produced three goals, giving Tigers their first win in the competition.

With all eight teams completing three matches, Alpha United with a superior goal difference of plus 17, lead the points standing.

GDF, who are also unbeaten, are second with a goal difference of plus nine which means that both teams (Alpha and GDF) have nine points each.

Fruta Conquerors, like Sunburst Camptown, are currently third with six points as they have a plus-two goal difference.

Pele and Western Tigers with three points each occupy the fifth and sixth spots while GFC and Flamingo are both pointless.

Meanwhile, on Friday, GDF defeated GFC by a 5-0 margin, compliments of Hubert Pedro who netted a first-half hat-trick in the 24th, 35th and 39th minutes while Desford Williams and Marlon Benjamin accounted for the other two goals in the 20th and 85th minutes respectively.

In the other game of Friday’s double-header card, Fruta Conquerors edged Pele 1-0 through a Vurlon Mills’ 51st minute goal.
