IN a previous letter I mentioned that the Black youth is in a serious predicament. In that letter I also alluded to the fact that poor family structure and the actions of some “so called Black Leaders” in society were the contributing factors for the crime situation that has now reached crisis proportions.

My article today shall go into some more details on the second mentioned factor. It started at Ann’s Grove quickly spreading to other neighbouring villages, where prominent political figures were seen making recruits for “the revolution.” The term revolution here is in referral to the way in which that political party intended to oust the PPP/C out of office, telling them that guns and training would be provided for this revolution. Some of those in attendance chided the recruiters telling them in crude Guyanese street talk “yu’all think Black man is…. (female anatomy). However, others there were not so smart and took up the offer. This, my dear readers is the genesis to the present day gun culture in Guyana. So when the armoury was “allegedly” broken into twice, the die has been cast for a crime spree Texan style, guns and more guns.

What those political people failed to take into consideration is that weapons which are in the hands of youngsters prone to a life of crime is a ticking time bomb, something that would spin out of control. And this is exactly the result, the lives of innocent people are been snuffed out daily.
The present situation is a crisis far greater than most of us would admit.
