POINTE-A-PIERRE, Trinidad (CMC) – Defending champions PowerGen are through to the quarter-finals of the WIPA Twenty20 cricket series after using a ‘Super Over’ to beat Dominica when their match ended in a tie at Guaracara Park on Tuesday night. Sent in to bat, Dominica were kept quiet by disciplined bowling by the Trinidad and Tobago side as they struggled to 111 for seven off their 20 overs. Openers Tyrone Theophille (20) and Martin Matthew (33) posted 50 off 9.5 overs and when they were dismissed, only Kirsten Casimir with 23 off 18 balls offered any hope for the Islanders. Only five boundaries were struck in the entire innings. Bowling for PowerGen, left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed took three for 18 and there was a wicket apiece for Sherwin Ganga, Ravi Rampaul and Guyanese import Mahendra Nagamootoo. In reply, PowerGen were kept in check by the visitors, as wickets fell regularly. Skipper Jason Mohammed top-scored with 36 scored off 34 balls with five fours. The next best effort was Nicholas Sookdeosingh’s 18 off 20 balls. With 10 runs needed off the last over bowled by Mervyn Matthew, PowerGen batsmen Ryan Hurley and Dave Mohammed only collected nine and the match ended in a tie when they finished 111 for six. For the Super Over, PowerGen used Evin Lewis, Sookdeosingh and the Barbadian Hurley. Vincent Casimir bowled a very good over claiming two wickets and conceding just five runs. PowerGen then asked Hurley to do his magic and he returned the favour by grabbing two wickets for just three runs when Theophille, Vincent Casimir and Kirsten Casimir took to the crease for Dominica. In the earlier game, Queen’s Park CC dominated Ihsan Invaders. Queen’s Park batsman Daron Cruickshank continued his impressive form with his second successive half-century to take his team to a 74-run win over Ihsan Invaders. Cruickshank slammed a hurricane 97 not out to take Queen’s Park to a commanding 195 for three off 20 overs and Invaders in reply could muster only 121 for eight. Cruickshank’s innings followed his unbeaten 51 against Maple on Sunday. After Queen’s Park lost skipper Justin Guillen cheaply, Cruickshank and Runako Morton took the score to 100 in just 13 overs before Morton fell for a 34-ball 41. Cruickshank motored on and although he lost Keiron Pollard soon after, he found an able ally in Darren Bravo (31 not out) and they took the game away from Invaders. Invaders always found the going tough and only Guyanese Devon Clement with 48 offered any resistance. He scored his runs from 37 balls with four fours and a six. Rayad Emrit grabbed three for 25 and Amit Jaggernauth two for 13 for Queen’s Park.
