POMSC hold their nerve to beat Devonshire Castle

IN an exciting final at the Tenneze Ferme Sports Club ground, Lower Pomeroon River, and a match reduced to 30 overs-a-side so as to facilitate the third place playoff between Rising Sun Sports Club and Friendship Sports Club, Pomeroon Oil Mill Sports Club (POMSC) held their nerve to beat Devonshire Castle Sports Club by six wickets last Sunday.

Winning the toss and electing to bowl on a pitch with a fair amount of grass on it, Devonshire was put early on the back foot by an opening stand of 51 by Eric Gomes and Krish Mangra, before Mangra was caught off the bowling of Manoj Lall for 34 which contained seven well-struck fours.

Carlos Thornhill then joined his skipper and together they added 41 before Gomes was bowled by Govindra Lall for 27 (3×4) with the score on 92, triggering a mini collapse as POMSC lost three more wickets for 14 runs but a stand of 39 between Mukesh Singh 28 (3×4) and Gregory Benjamin 25 (2×4, 1×6) and a late attack from their lower order got them to 176 for 8 when their 30 overs expired.

Bowling for Devonshire Castle, Ramesh Persaud with 3 for 37 off 6 overs was the main destroyer while there were two wickets for Manoj Lall and Govindra Lall.

Devonshire Castle’s run chase began in the worst possible way as Darsahanan Lall found the pace and accuracy of Gregory Benjamin hard to manage and was bowled for 1 with the score on 7 in the third over of their innings. The other batsmen never threatened and failed to build a partnership as they were left struggling at 91 for 7.

A stand of 64 runs between man-of- the-match Ramesh Narine 72 (9×4) and Latchman Persaud 26 (1×4) got them back in the match but with overs running out they were forced to go for the big shots and sharp singles which caused Narine’s dismissal with the score on 155.

Two runs later Lall, trying to go over the top, had his stumps knocked over by Roy Rajkumar. However Manoj Lall and Orvil Persaud took the match into the last over bowled by Luke Samuels with 12 needed.

The bowler kept his cool and sent down the first 5 balls for just 5 runs, with seven needed to win. Knowing only a six would force an unexpected tie, Lall tried to clear the ropes and was caught at extra cover by Mukesh Singh, prompting wild celebrations on the field by the large crowd around the ground.

Gregory Benjamin, Gary France and Roy Rajkumar each with two wickets were the principal bowlers for POMSC.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, president of the Pomeroon Sports Committee, Fizul Bacchus, thanked Alfro Alphonso and family for sponsoring the competition and congratulated both teams for making it to the final and lauded them for the discipline they exhibited.

RDC Councillor Pooran Persaud also thanked the sponsor and both teams for the high level of discipline and spirit in which the game was played.

The Pomeroon Sports Committee was praised for the high level of organisation.

POMSC received a large winner’s trophy and $25 000 while each player received gold medals. Devonshire Castle received $15 000 and silver medals. Friendship Sports Club who defeated Rising Sun Sports in the third-place playoff received $7 500 while Rising Sun got $5 000 for their fourth-place finish

The wicketkeeper award for the most dismissals (10) in the competition went to Lennox Baharally. The bowler with the most wickets went to Devin Takerdeen who got 13, while Barry Alphonso was the batsman with the most runs in the competition as well as the batsman with the highest score in a match – an astonishing 160 against Siriki Sports Club playing for Cavaliers.

Christopher Calvan of Knight Riders Sports Club got the award for the bowler with the most wickets in a match – 7 for 31 against Under-17 Sports Club.
