Inter-secondary impromptu speaking competition continues today

The Inter-Secondary School Impromptu Speaking Competition continues today with Marian Academy going up against Cummings Lodge Secondary and President’s College against School of the Nations.

Sponsored by the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI), the competition will be held at the GBTI Recreational Centre.

Last Tuesday, several fourth formers from four schools competed in two contests where they selected various topics and spoke to be adjudged the best impromptu speaker.

In the first contest, St. John’s College showed better composure and awareness as they succeeded over Institute of Business Education (IBE) leading IBE with 516 points against their 592 points.

The topics spoken on by IBE were reading is the best form of relaxation; results are more important that character in our national leaders; and the most fundamental wrong is selfishness.

St. John’s College topics were if you were a teacher how would your class be different; women should have careers outside the home; and how can we stop domestic violence.

In the second contest, Central High School overcame Christ Church Secondary with 557 points as opposed to 506 points.

The topics selected by Christ Church Secondary were what I want for my country in the next 10 years; should smoking be banned in public places; and what I would want to do to promote tourism in Guyana.

Judges for the event today willl be Mr. Sheik Sadiq, Ms. Maureen Williams and Ms. Abiola Inniss, and the finals are scheduled for June 9, 2009.
