LONDON, England (Reuters) – West Indies succumbed to the whole-hearted pace of Graham Onions and the flighted spin of Graeme Swann on a cool, overcast second day in the first Test against England at Lord’s yesterday.
After slumping to 152 in their first innings in reply to England’s 377, West Indies were again in trouble after being asked to follow on. When bad light stopped play the visitors were 39 for two, still needing 186 to make England bat again.
Onions was rewarded for 9.3 overs of honest endeavour with five for 38 on his Test debut but will bowl better for less reward against more determined opposition. Only opener Devon Smith, with 46, lasted more than an hour at the crease.
Swann, an effervescent character who has replaced Monty Panesar as England’s number one spinner, played some bold strokes in reaching an unbeaten 63, hooking Lionel Baker for six to reach his maiden Test fifty.
He was then surprisingly thrown the ball to open the bowling with Stuart Broad, sending down two overs in his initial spell, before returning for an over before tea in which he took the wickets of Smith and Shivnarine Chanderpaul with successive balls.
Smith was bowled through a gap between bat and pad and Chanderpaul edged to the safe hands of Paul Collingwood at slip. The same combination accounted for a third left-hander in Brendan Nash (4) to give Swann figures of three for 16 from five overs.
EDWARDS REWARD
Onions ripped through the lower-order with three wickets in an over and five from 27 balls while Broad justified his promotion to first choice opening bowler with the wickets of captain Chris Gayle (28 from 34 balls) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (13). He reached 145 km an hour from the Nursery End and moved the ball enough to disconcert all the batsmen.
England captain Andrew Strauss, seeking to regain the Wisden Trophy relinquished in the Caribbean this year, enforced the follow-on with a minimum 31 overs remaining.
This time it was the turn of James Anderson, struck a nasty blow on the back of his helmet from Fidel Edwards while batting, who completed a miserable day for Gayle (0) and Sarwan (1).
Edwards was deservedly rewarded with six for 92 from 26.3 overs during which he combined high pace with late movement while suffering from the fallible West Indies’ fielders who dropped six catches in the final session on Wednesday. Three were off Edwards who still managed to record his best figures against England.
West Indies coach John Dyson told a news conference England were clearly happier in their own conditions.
“The England bowlers bowled exceptionally well,” he said. “They bowled with pace, they bowled with intent and they hit the seam and they bowled in the right areas plus their fielders caught well.”
