Fernandes arrives with big names for Cayman Open

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (CMC) – Guyanaxs squash ace Nicolette Fernandes has arrived with other world-rated players for the Cayman Open this week at the South Sound Squash Club.

On the comeback trail after a career-threatening knee injury, Fernandes is in the draw for the most impressive womenxs line-up ever assembled for a Caribbean tournament.

Malaysiaxs World No.1 Nicol David is among seven of the worldxs top ten players listed for the event starting tomorrow.

David is enjoying her 37th month as the World No.1 on the Women’s International Squash Players Association (WISPA) rankings list and has reigned uninterrupted at the top of the rankings for the last 34 months.

This will be her first tournament since her season opener at the Kuala Lumpur Open in March.

Fernandes, 25, is now in the third month of her comeback to pro squash after almost two years away because of knee trouble.

After a few tournaments in Europe where she defeated several top-100 players while reaching the semi-finals of the Eindhoven Open and the final of the Swiss Open, Fernandes has jumped over a hundred places up the world rankings and is now listed at 115th in the world.

Fernandes had reached an all-time best of No.27 in the world rankings before her injury.

The Cayman Open has been sold out but organisers are setting up huge television screens around the club for free viewing of matches.

xMassive Equipment Rental have set up a huge cinema-style projector for spectators,x said tournament director Dan Kneipp.

xDuring the tournament wexll have a high definition camera set up on the main show court, broadcasting it on Massivexs projector and televisions around the club,x Kneipp added.
