Soca Warriors to face Costa Rica in Tobago

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Local officials have decided that the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Tobago will be the venue for Trinidad and Tobago’s June 6 World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica.

The Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) special adviser Jack Warner said the decision was taken jointly by the TTFF and national team in conjunction with the Tobago House of Assembly.

“That has been agreed by the Football Federation and the Team’s technical staff and it was done in conjunction with the chief secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly Orville London. He was advised and he agreed that Tobago is part of Trinidad and Tobago and therefore it is only fair that a game should be played there,” Warner said.

T&T’s Soca Warriors are currently bottom of the CONCACAF qualifying table – with two points — for the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa with two draws and a loss and need a huge turnaround in form to advance to a second appearance at football’s biggest show.

Warner said the TTFF will incur a financial loss by playing at the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet but suggested the move is ideal to welcome back Tobago-born skipper Dwight Yorke from suspension.

“Although the stadium is holding 7 500 persons, some 15 000 less than the Hasely Crawford Stadium and while it is going to be a financial loss for the Federation, the Federation believes that with Dwight Yorke being back for that match and with the game being Russell Latapy’s first official World Cup match as head coach … Tobago shall have the honour of staging the event,” Warner told TTFF Media.

Warner added that tickets will be priced at TT$400 (US$66) for covered stands, TT$100 less than previous qualifying matches and $200 (US$33) for the uncovered area.

After three rounds of CONCACAF qualifying, the USA lead the six-team play-off with seven points, one ahead of Costa Rica (6), followed by Honduras (4), and Mexico (3).

T&T and El Salvador are bottom of the table with two points each.
