FIZAL Mohamed nicknamed ‘Dougla’, 28, of Lot 256 Rose Hall Town, Corentyne, Berbice, was sentenced to two years imprisonment, on Monday, for fraudulent conversion.
Before Magistrate Chandra Sohan, at Albion Court, Corentyne, the defendant pleaded guilty to the offence.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Faizal Karimbaksh, prosecuting, told the Court that, during August 2008, at Courtland, Corentyne, the convict was entrusted, by Kevaughn Cort, to safely keep a gold chain valued $100,000, belonging to Shenese Paul.
But Mohamed converted it to his own use and disappeared.
However, the prisoner claimed he was living home with the aunt of the virtual complainant in Linden and only on his return to Berbice did he learn that the chain was disputed property.
Pleading for leniency, Mohamed said he has a wife and four children but the Prosecutor declared that the fraudster had betrayed the trust shown in him.
