PNCR should not make domestic violence a political issue

THE recent concern expressed by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) about the existing legislation and programmes being unable to stem the rise of domestic violence in Guyana has been noted.

I wish to ask the executive of the PNCR what have they done while in or out of office to address the issue of domestic violence and what has been the results.

This question is relevant given that this type of behaviour is not learnt overnight but is developed over years of socialisation. Given the fact that the PNC were in government for 28 years prior to the present administration being elected to office and that domestic violence is not new to the Guyanese society an explanation of the policies and programmes that were in place under their government may reveal why there appears to be an increase in the number of cases.

Contrary to the PNCRs position, I do believe that the incidents of domestic violence appear to be increasing simply because of the legislation and programmes in place to assist victims. More reports are being recorded and victims are now seeking help.

The PNCR should, instead of making this a political issue, support the programmes and encourage its constituent to formulate programmes to educate persons on the issue.

Domestic violence affects the entire nation irrespective of political persuasion.
