German Chess grand master due on Thursday

CHESS enthusiasts in Guyana will have the opportunity to interact with grand master (GM) Rainer Buhmann of Germany when he pays a visit here from Thursday to Sunday.

GM Buhmann has been invited to participate in the upcoming Heroes Day Cup Chess Tournament in Barbados, which is scheduled to run from April 27 to May 3 2009. He expressed an interest to the Committee for Assistance to Chess Developing Countries (CACDEC) in visiting Guyana prior to the start of that tournament.

During his visit, GM Buhmann will participate in various activities organised by the Guyana Chess Federation.

The title is awarded to extremely strong chess masters by the world chess organisation FIDE.

Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Once achieved, the title is held for life. In chess literature it is usually abbreviated as GM.

The Guyana Chess Federation welcomes the auspicious gesture and hopes that Buhmann’s visit will serve as a catalyst to expedite the development of chess in the country, particularly in securing the kind of sponsorship the sport needs for a quantum leap forward.
