Fighters wind down training for ‘Big Showdown’

ON March 25 Cliff Anderson Sports Hall will come alive once again with fistic fury and brawling braves as S&S Promotions puts on the ‘The Big Showdown’ card that features national middleweight champion Howard ‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman and Lennox Allen in the main bout.

Allen, who has been on a three-month training stint in the United States of America, will be returning later in the day to wind up his training in Guyana. Eastman, on the other hand, is training out of his hometown of New Amsterdam.

The 12-round feature bout will see the two boxers fight for the super-middleweight title of Guyana. Eastman is also the middleweight title of Guyana. Eastman’s impressive career spans 50 fights with 44 wins, 6 losses and 35 of those wins coming by way of knockout.

Allen’s budding career has not seen any defeat in its nine bouts and five wins by the knockout route. Therefore, Allen will have to employ all the techniques that his three-month stint overseas with trainer Colin Morgan would have taught him if he is to be victorious against the seasoned pugilist.

‘Battersea Bomber’ Eastman also has in his collection the British Commonwealth WBA and IBO Intercontinental middleweight belts along with being former British and European champion.

Come April 25 Eastman would be displaying the class that he has shown on countless occasions prior to this bout.

However, Allen can find solace in the fact that in Eastman’s last bout against Leon ‘The Lion’ Gilkes on February 28, he was not as clinical and impressive as when he defended his national middleweight title against Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis and when he won the vacant middleweight title of Guyana from ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton.

Meanwhile, in the other bouts debutants Abby Tyson, of America Street, will duke it out against Avlon Scotland of Linden. The ‘Agricola Boom’ Shelly Gibson, fighting out of the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Gym will be fighting Shondell Parks of Linden in a four-round match up.

Another Lindener in Randy Tello will make his debut against Kwesi Jones in a four-round middleweight. Bantamweight champion of Guyana, Dexter Marques, of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) will take on Paul Lewis in a six-round catch-weight encounter.

In another bout of the evening, Stephney George, who fought for a world title in 2004 against Leona Brown, will fight WIBC Iberian bantamweight champion Shondell Alfred, for Alfred’s bantamweight title of Guyana.
