Newspapers cannot boost religious beliefs

CATHOLIC activist, Mr. Leon Jameson Suseran, says the daily “newspapers gave sparse Good Friday and Easter coverage” (GC Apr 15th).

As far I can remember these events occur every year on the same date, with the same festivities, same events, same pictures, year after year.

Could Mr. Suseran say what, in his mind, the “news” means? What is the “new” in these two thousand or so year old celebrations that is worth “publicising”?

Could he tell us what this year has been about that is different from last year or the year before or the year before that and on and on?

What Mr. Suseran wants, of course, is “breaking news” and front page banner headlines about Christ’s crucifixion and alleged resurrection printed in the newspapers. Apparently reading what’s printed in the bible is not sufficient for him. (Do Catholics read the bible anyway?)

My advice to Mr. Suseran is that if you want people to experience your Jesus then invite them to your church. Don’t depend on the newspapers to do your religious boosting; to give “true meaning” to your private religious beliefs.
