The annual Bartica Regatta is known to attract thousands of people from across the country and further afield. This year was no exception as both residents and tourists came out in their numbers to experience this unique feature of Guyana’s domestic tourism which has been rapidly developing. Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, who declared the event open, said that he was pleased with this development and hopes that the event continues to grow into one of Guyana’s major tourism calendar events. “Bartica has great potential in its continued growth and development of our country,” he added. He noted that Region Seven is a leading place where the major economic activities are mining and logging. He urged residents to move further downstream where they can become involved in manufacturing furniture and other products, adding that there is also great potential for agriculture development. Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad, said that with the success of the event over the years, the organisers have decided to make the regatta a two-day event which augurs well for its development. Region Seven Chairman Holbert Knights said that he was pleased with the growth of the event and noted that new activities have been added to maintain visitors’ interests while attracting more people. Alvah George from the Essequibo Coast said that every year she looks forward to the event and every year it keeps improving. She noted that each year the community gets visitors from all over and it helps to form the culture and her participation contributes to it. The Bartica Regatta is a calendar event that the Ministry of Tourism has been promoting over the years as it recognises the event’s potential in tourism development of the country. Simultaneously, other major events that are taking place over this Easter weekend around the country include the Rupununi Rodeo and Kite Flying Competitions at the No. 63 Beach, Berbice and the Georgetown seawalls. “Bartica has a great future like all of Guyana but I have learnt one important thing about our future; the future we will have is one that we will make and create for ourselves and our children and grandchildren so we have a challenge to make sure that the potential of Bartica is realised,” Prime Minister Hinds said.
