Mrs. Jagan’s influence and admiration are indeed far-reaching

THE influence and admiration of Mrs. Jagan are indeed far-reaching. Last Friday evening I sat in a meeting that was far removed from the Guyanese scene in the United States. One of the attendees was a retired medical doctor who happened to be one of the first African-American doctors in his State.

As we talked and he learned of my Guyanese-origin, he became sad and, to my surprise, began to lament about the passing of Mrs. Jagan. I then proceeded to ask him how much he knew about her and to my surprise, once again, he proceeded to inform me that he was an admirer of her work in Guyana.

I learned that the African-American community identified with her and her struggles and effort to help Guyana achieve its independence. In his words, she was a remarkable woman in that she gave up everything to embrace the struggles of a people, human struggles similar to that of the African-American community.

Though my parents had enlightened me on the efforts of Mrs. Jagan since it was way before my time, last Friday evening the impact of her work finally hit home as I heard from this doctor what a remarkable woman she was.
