After winning the toss and electing to bat at Queen’s Park Oval, Trinidad and Tobago were bowled out for 157 off 49.1 overs. The top scorer in T&T’s innings was Anthony Simmons, who scored 38 runs from 78 balls. The only other player to offer any resistance was Isiah Rajah (24). Gayle led the Jamaica bowling with three for 16 while Oshane Walters (2-26) and Raghni Francis (2-34) shared four wickets. In their turn at the crease Jamaica made light work of T&T’s total getting to 161 for the loss of five wickets in just 33.2 overs. Walters top-scored with 50 while Gayle, who was later adjudged man-of-the-match, scored a quick-paced 34 not out to sink the ex-champions. In the most exciting match of the opening round, Guyana clipped last year’s runners-up Barbados with two balls to spare at the National Cricket Centre. Barbados, on the back of 51 from captain Shai Hope and 47 from Matthew Clarke, scored 204 for six off their 50 overs. Guyana, in their turn at the crease, lost wickets at regular intervals but Chanderpaul Hemraj with 75 bolstered their chase and together with Faizul Sattur (38) inched their team to victory at 205 for nine off 49.4 overs. At Inshan Ali Park, the Windwards had a whopping 116-run victory over the Leewards. Keron George scored 50 and Kadeir Nedd struck 55, as Windwards made 270 for seven off their 50 overs. Vijay Harrinarine was the best bowler for the Leewards with three for 40. The Leewards in reply made 154 all out off 32.1 overs with Lornell Dore getting 54 and Darren Hobson 50.
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Jamaica got their CLICO West Indies Under-15 title-defence off to a rousing start yesterday when they defeated hosts Trinidad and Tobago by five wickets in the opening round.
