Ex-prisoner accused of taking car, money at gunpoint

ANTONIO Paul Persaud, 21, of Lot 56 Sandy Babb Street, Kitty, Georgetown, was remanded overnight when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday, charged with robbery under arms.

The prisoner was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which said, last February 20, while in company with another man, he robbed Zaman Alladin, at gunpoint, of one motor car valued $2M and $5,000 cash.

Defence Counsel Vic Puran, in a failed bail application, said the accused was in Berbice with his family, including a two-year-old daughter, when the crime was committed.

But Police Inspector Denise Griffith, prosecuting, said Persaud could not satisfy investigators where he was in that county.

The accused, who said he was discharged from prison on February 6, will have to make another Court appearance today, at Wales, West Bank Demerara, to where his case has been transferred.
