Speaking about the meeting, to the media at her Waterloo Street, Georgetown office, she said their discourse touched several areas, notably education and tourism.

Westford said attention was paid to expanding the Mexico Scholarship Programme, which currently offers four post graduate scholarships for Guyanese to study agriculture and water engineering.

She said a project, for Guyanese teachers to study Spanish in Mexico and for their Mexican counterparts to learn English in Guyana was also discussed.

Westford said the rationale for the latter is to build capacity in local teachers to impart the foreign language on their return rather than bring persons from overseas to do the job.

Ambassador Sandoval said his country, through CARICOM, has been training teachers to teach its language and noted that four Guyanese students have already been successful at the Mexico post graduate course.

He said Mexico is interested in investing in tourism here, particularly in the area of eco-tourism and emphasised that his country is willing to exchange expert programming with Guyana to mutually develop the sector of both countries.

The diplomat said that a consular unit will be established to pursue those interests but his country is looking at other possible areas of cooperation.
