Hundreds sign Book of Condolence in Berbice

A BOOK of Condolence has been opened for former President and First Lady Janet Jagan, O.E. at the New Amsterdam, Berbice headquarters of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Hundreds of people had already put their signatures in it yesterday while briefly reflecting on the life of a dear comrade, who created history by being the first female Head of State in this country.

Chairman of Region Six (East

Berbice/Corentyne). Mr. Zulficar Mustapha admitted being saddened by the news of her death which he received at 00:30h on Saturday morning.

He said, following the revelation, the mood displayed by party members was sombre at subsequent meetings on various locations.

Mustapha, also a member of the Central Executive Committee of the PPP, said the late President spent 66 years in her adopted homeland fighting for Guyana’s freedom.

“Her experience and guidance will be missed and she is irreplaceable,” he added.

As the PPP Supervisor in Regions Five and Six, Mustapha said he is charged with the responsibility for preparing Babu John crematorium for her funeral service today.

Meanwhile, New Amsterdam Mayor, Mr. Claude Henry also expressed regret at the passing of Dr. Cheddi Jagan’s widow.

He alluded to her different roles, as Minister of Labour, Health and Housing and Home Affairs and legislator, as well as Editor of the ‘Mirror’ newspaper and said her works have left an imprint in the sands of time.

Henry noted, however, that her death represents the end of an era, as she was the last of the original founding members of the Political Affairs Committee (PAC), forerunner to the PPP, the others being the late Dr. Jagan and Mr. Jocelyn Hubbard and Senior Counsel Ashton Chase, too.

Henry tendered sympathy to the PPP and the children of Mrs. Jagan, Joey and Nadira.

Meanwhile, wakes are being held at the PPP New Amsterdam Headquarters in Charlotte Street; Number 63, Yakusari and Mibicuri (Black Bush Polder), Crabwood Creek and Hampshire, all on Corentyne.
