The judicial system about to open a new chapter

THERE is much speculation about the judicial system at the moment with respect to the huge backlog of cases which some political activists say would lead to the collapse of this vital system. I totally disagree with these statements.

As I recall the Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag.), Carl Singh had said that he would be focusing on this area and had urged that judges and magistrates dispense justice in a timely manner.

Early in the year when the budget was announced it was said that government would be devising a comprehensive plan to deal with the large number of backlogged cases. In fact, the Justice Modernisation System will deal with this issue in ensuring there is more timely dispensation of justice.

For this government has allocated $1.8B. I am quite sure that when the new Civil Procedure Rules are implemented it will aid in reducing the length of time from when a case is filed to its hearing.

While these changes may require much consultation I am sure that the judicial system is about to open a new chapter.
