There should be standards set within schools

PLEASE allow me to render my support to the Ministry of Education for being firm in its decision to let discipline prevail in our schools as reported in Kaieteur News dated Tuesday, February 17, 2009.

I am reminded of my days at school when teachers thought it was important to carry inspections everyday to ensure that students conform to the schoolxs reputation for maintaining discipline and academic achievement.

Hence it is this context I agree with the minister when he said that there should be standards set within schools especially in light of the appalling behaviour of the students at Tutorial High School who recently recorded a xfightx using cellular phones for imminent web broadcast.

While many persons, including the anonymous parent, may see the Ministryxs action as trivial, schools should be encouraged to set rules and limits for maintaining a rational and orderly relationship with students to effect an environment that is conducive to learning.

It should be remembered that in school, we are taught a lesson and then given a test but in life we are given a test that teaches us a lesson.

The Ministry should continue on this road until both students and parents can enjoy the benefits of school which go well beyond excelling in academics but extend further with good manners which are essential for life.
