Corbin needs to back unity call with action

IT WAS comforting to note that Leader of the Opposition, Robert Corbin in his New Year’s message called for unity in Guyana. This call is comforting in that if it is really Corbin’s intention for the country to move forward in unity, then several matters could be dealt with expeditiously as we move ahead to consolidate our democracy.

The appointment of persons to the Rights Commission and the reaching of an agreement to have broadcast legislation enacted are just two of the areas that could be used to show his commitment to the unity that he has called for.

The hypocrisy in his address cannot be overlooked, since he seems to be administering a party that is falling apart, mainly due to his leadership style.

On another note, why was there a mix-up at Channel 2 on Old Year’s Night? Why was the Opposition Leader’s New Year message broadcast at midnight instead of the President’s? This, I am certain, is unprecedented in any democracy. It would have been better that they opted not to show the President’s message at midnight, as Channel 7 did, rather than display unquestionable bias.
