The future of SOCU and SARA

Dear Editor,

I wish to share some of my thoughts on SOCU and SARA, and similar institutions which have been established. What we have are excellent systems on paper. A lot of training for personnel was done and continues to be done, but at the end of it all, the successful implementation hinges on integrity. If integrity is missing, those institutions would achieve very little, if anything.

Who at SOCU leaked confidential information to the media? Is he/she on that newspaper’s payroll? This leak has compromised the investigation, will jeopardise other cases, and places the organisation in disrepute.
The solution is to train some of the young University of Guyana graduates who have no association or previous experience with any of these institutions.

The problem is one of recycling the same staff, instead of removing those guilty of wrongdoing; so they are being shift around the GPF and are now being transferred to other agencies, like SOCU.

Finally, the representatives of the Bar Association are calling for special court judges to expedite these matters and avoid delay. I agree with this, but delay is sometimes caused by the said legal fraternity for various reasons, such as more legal fees.
It will be a good thing for the lawyers to be honest with their clients, work for their fees and demand speedy trials for their clients, instead of asking for other dates or sending their clerks to the courts to collect same.

The change must start with the legal fraternity.
