NIS closes office next to prison

FOLLOWING Sunday afternoon’s prison break at the Georgetown Prisons on Camp Street, the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) has closed its office in the vicinity of the prison until further notice.

The agency stated in a release that employers who wish to make contribution payments or conduct any other financial transaction can do so at the entity’s Head Office situated at Brickdam and Winterplace.

Contribution records can also be uplifted at that office the NIS said and the entity reminded employers that contributions for the month of June are due and payable on or before July 15.

The environs of the prison were cordoned-off on Sunday evening following the unrest, which saw the facility being gutted while five prisoners escaped from the facility. Prison officer, Odinga Wickham, succumbed to gunshot wounds he sustained during the unrest.
