FORMER Registrar of the University of Guyana (UG) Vincent Alexander will be chairing the National Accreditation Council (NAC) which comprises of 10 members.This was approved and gazette on October 5, 2015 through an amended Cabinet decision submitted by Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine. The Board will be effective for one year, from September 1, 2015 to August 31, 2016.
The National Accreditation Council members include: Winifred James Kippins, who was previously tipped to head the council, Archibald Clifton, Clem Duncan, Mark Lyte, Sophia Hunte, Andrew Grant, Camille Robertson, Jennifer Cumberbatch and Dawn Fox.
The NAC of Guyana was established by an Act of Parliament in 2004. The Council is the principal body in Guyana for conducting and advising on the accreditation and recognition of educational and training institutions, providers, programmes and awards, whether foreign or national and for the promotion of the quality and standards of education and training in Guyana.
As one of the functions of the NAC, quality assurance at the post-secondary or tertiary level is done. These include registration of institutions within and outside of Guyana which offer courses in Guyana, accreditation of programmes, advice on the recognition of foreign institutions of education and training and their awards and to determine equivalency of programmes and qualifications in accordance with the framework established for the Caribbean Community. The Chairman and members of the Council are all representatives of Stakeholders of Education in Guyana.
