As part of government’s commitment to expand health facilities across the country and to ensure all citizens have access to quality health care services, the Ministry of Health last week commissioned the refurbished Mon Repos Health Centre, East Coast Demerara.
This health centre is providing services five days per week, in areas such as maternal, child health care, family planning and visual inspection using acetic acid (VIA).
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Region Four (Demerara/Mahaica) Regional Health Officer, Vasha Bachan said that initially the centre was operating as a chronic disease and outpatient outreach clinic thrice weekly, which caused most of the residents to seek services at neighbouring Beterverwagting and Lusignan Health Centres.
Recognising the increasing number of housing schemes on the East Coast, she explained that the Ministry sought a solution and decided to have the centre fully functional so as to ease the burden placed on the other facilities.
The centre’s staff was complemented with an additional midwife and nursing assistant to carry out daily clinics. Bachan added that the facility is timely and will see the residents benefiting significantly from quality health care.
“It called for a great effort to improve not only the physical aspects of the building, but also address the complement of staff in order to have the centre fully functional,” she said. Bachan further stated that the Ministry will be providing additional services in the near future.
She said that the Ministry will continue its drive to improve the standard of health facilities across the country, and will be looking forward to working with the Regional Democratic Council and members of the community to offer the highest level of health care attainable at the centres.
The Ministry of Health has the responsibility to ensure health care services are equitably dispensed throughout the length and breadth of Guyana.
Ministry of Health’s Parliamentary Secretary, Joseph Hamilton reiterated that the Ministry will work assiduously to ensure the same services are extended to communities such as La Bonne Intention (LBI), Le Ressouvenir and Success, also on the East Coast Demerara especially to accommodate pregnant mothers.(GINA)
