THE Lions Club of Central Demerara presented the four top performers among schools in the East Bank Demerara area with bursaries for their performance at the National Grade Six Assessment Examinations. On July 23 last, each of these four children received a cash award, along with several books, compliments of the Georgetown Reading and Research Centre.
Ricardo Singh of Providence Primary School gained 536 marks; Gomattie Nandalall of Covent Garden Primary School 534 marks; Mickele Dodson of Peters Hall Primary 531 marks; and Romario Ibrahim of Covent Garden Primary 520 marks.
They have each been awarded a place at Queen’s College.
Present at the ceremony were members of the Lions Club, parents of the awardees, and teachers from the four schools.
While congratulating the awardees, Education Officer, Stembiso Grant called on parents to be more supportive of their children, since the students will be entering a very challenging phase of their education.
She also encouraged the teachers to continue working for continued improvement in the delivery of education, and she thanked the Lions Club for providing the awards.
Immediate Past District Governor, Surujpaul Singh addressed the role of Lion members in education worldwide, and challenged the club to continue its support of education.
He congratulated the awardees, their parents and teachers, and urged the students to work hard to achieve success.
This is the 15th consecutive year in which the club has provided bursaries, and the event is the first activity for the Lions’ newly installed executives for fiscal year 2012-2013.
The continued support of education on the East Bank Demerara is prominent in the club’s programme for this fiscal year. Preparations are on stream for the graduation of secondary students who participated in the recently concluded second speech craft training programme.
An essay competition among all secondary schools on the East Bank Demerara is planned as part of Education Month activities in September.
A computer for the Mocha Primary School, books for the Soesdyke Secondary School Library, and gardening tools for the Timehri Primary School are among the club’s recent involvement in education on the East Bank Demerara.
