Prem Misir’s essential point is that the media should learn from Rwanda

SUBSEQUENT to reading Seelochan Beharry’s letter titled ‘An apocalyptic vision run amok’ published by Stabroek News on October 28, 2011, it seems that Beharry misconceived the facts on the mass media’s role in the Rwanda Genocide 1994, and incited misinformation about Dr. Prem Misir’s letter titled “Raising the Guyana mass media bar through the Rwanda genocide”. Perhaps, he understands the issues, but he has wicked intentions.
As a University of Guyana International Relations student, I am quite familiar with the international social and political climates, past and present. I have read Misir’s letter and realized that Beharry’s missive is purely superfluous. I would recommend that Beharry re-read Misir’s letter and try to understand the message properly before making unjustifiable and unsupported conclusions.
Misir’s letter has given supported evidence and the facts about the evil role of the mass media in the Rwanda Genocide of 1994. It is a message for the local and international media communities to remember what took place that time, so that such tragedy is not only prevented in the future, but that media houses, wherever they are, will reject the nefarious media role in the Rwanda genocide.
He explained that,  nearing elections, “parts of the private media are the new opposition, and where so much racial incitement remains the norm in both print and broadcast journalism, it is pertinent to examine and reflect on the iniquitous Rwanda mass media’s ‘extermination’ role in The genocide against Tutsis”.
Basically, Beharry should note that Misir is emphasizing the fact that parts of the private media are violating journalistic ethics and disregarding the importance of public interest. Also, this so-called new opposition are no longer ‘watch dogs’ in a democratic society, but alliances to contest the 2011 national elections.  Beharry has the right to join which party he wishes, but it is no surprise that his choice is to join the AFC, since the AFC also has the attribute of misconceiving and misunderstanding things.
Finally, it appears to me that Misir’s essential point was that media houses around the world can learn from the nasty role of the Rwanda media in the Rwanda genocide, and ensure that media houses would take the necessary remedial actions in their daily journalistic pursuits.
