JPs Association hosts successful seminar

THE Association of Justices and Peace and Commissioners of Oaths held a one-day seminar at the Islamic Complex at Anna Catherina on the West Coast of Demerara Saturday last.
The seminar started at 9:15 hours and 15 Justices of Peace and Commissioners of Oaths from Essequibo, West Demerara, Georgetown and Linden were in attendance. The chairman of the proceedings was Mr Farook Baksh.

The Deputy Commander for West Demerara, Superintendent Paul Williams was invited to give the opening address.
Mr. Williams spoke about the character of the person appointed to be Justice of Peace and/or Commissioner of Oaths and further advised the participants to be circumspect when giving someone a recommendation.
The President of the association educated the participants on the historical development of the role of the Justices of Peace and Commissioner of Oaths and about the sources of the law and classification with respect to the duties of the Justices of Peace and Commissioner of Oaths. He further explained the Latin term used every day in preparing documents. Later in the day the participants gathered in three groups to do case study on affidavit of identity.
The General Secretary of the association advised the participants on the correct way to fill out minor clerical, marriage licence application and passport forms.
The PRO of the association advised the participants on the art and importance of listening and what are some of the signs displayed when someone might be contemplating suicide.
The Imam of the mosque offered the opening prayer and the President of the complex welcomed everyone that attended the seminar and assured the use of the complex for any such future activity.
