THE Alliance For Change (AFC) has joined the nation in mourning the passing of Robert Corbin, former Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and former leader of the opposition in Guyana’s National Assembly.
“Mr Corbin was an astute politician, a formidable strategist and a man whose political mind was, in many respects, second to none. His contribution to Guyana’s political development spanned decades, and his influence extended well beyond the positions he held – whether as Party Leader, Minister, Member of Parliament, or Attorney-at-Law.
“The AFC particularly recognises Mr Corbin’s contribution to the evolution of political co-operation and opposition unity in Guyana. His strategic vision and willingness to engage in the difficult work of bringing political forces together helped set the stage for the formation of the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and, subsequently, for the Cummingsburg Accord, which brought the AFC and APNU together for the 2015 General and Regional Elections,” the AFC said.
This achievement, the party said, represented an important moment in Guyana’s political history and demonstrated the possibilities that can emerge when political leaders are prepared to look beyond immediate partisan considerations in pursuit of a larger national objective.
“In the early years of the AFC’s existence, there were, naturally, tensions and political differences between the two parties. Yet, Mr Corbin never allowed those differences to descend into personal rancour or disrespect towards the AFC. In his engagements with the Alliance For Change, he consistently demonstrated maturity, stoicism, restraint and a strong sense of nationalism. That quality deserves particular recognition.
“Politics can be intensely competitive, but Mr Corbin understood that political competition need not destroy the possibility of dialogue, co-operation or mutual respect. His approach reflected an appreciation that, ultimately, political parties and politicians are temporary custodians of a nation whose interests are greater than any individual or organisation,” the party said.
The AFC therefore said it honours Corbin not only for the offices he held, but also for the contribution he made to the development of Guyana’s political landscape and to the evolution of a young nation.
“The Alliance For Change extends its deepest sympathy to Mrs Corbin, his children, wider family, colleagues, friends and all those who mourn his passing. May they find strength and comfort in this difficult time. The AFC recognises and honours Robert H.O. Corbin’s service to Guyana and his contribution to the formation and development of our young nation. May his soul rest in peace,” the AFC said.
