GUYANA’S Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation and Development has been named one of Travel and Tour World’s “50 Best Eco-Tourism Destinations in the World for 2026,” reinforcing the country’s growing reputation as a leader in sustainable tourism and rainforest conservation.
According to information from the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), the global recognition underscores Iwokrama’s model of balancing biodiversity protection with low-impact tourism, while providing livelihood opportunities for surrounding Indigenous and local communities.
Further cementing its green credentials, Iwokrama was first awarded the Green Destinations Good Travel Seal Certificate in 2023 for a two-year period and successfully renewed the certification in 2026, signalling ongoing, measurable progress in key sustainability indicators such as environmental management, cultural preservation, and community benefit.
These achievements align closely with national priorities, as the Ministry of Tourism, Industry & Commerce and the Guyana Tourism Authority continue to champion responsible tourism development, conservation, and community engagement across Guyana.
Together, these efforts position the country’s tourism sector as a vital partner in safeguarding its rainforest heritage while attracting discerning eco-travellers from around the world.
