Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar on Tuesday convened a high-level meeting with key power sector stakeholders to strengthen crisis management and improve responses to electricity disruptions, amid ongoing efforts to stabilise Guyana’s energy supply.
The meeting brought together executives from Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL), Power Producers and Distributors Inc. (PPDI), and representatives from Wärtsilä, along with technical teams responsible for power generation, transmission, and distribution.
According to information released, discussions focused on enhancing coordination during emergencies, improving communication systems, and ensuring continuous training of personnel to better manage power-related crises.
Director General Alfonso De Armas and GPL executive management committee team leader Kesh Nandlall were among senior officials participating in the engagement.
The meeting forms part of broader government efforts to address persistent challenges in the electricity sector, including system failures, infrastructure constraints, and increasing demand.
Guyana’s power grid, managed primarily by GPL, plays a critical role in supporting economic growth but has long faced reliability issues, including periodic outages and technical faults.
Recent incidents, including system disturbances and infrastructure damage, have underscored the need for improved emergency response mechanisms and more resilient operations.
More recently, the administration has been advancing a series of expansion and modernisation projects aimed at strengthening grid resilience, including new substations, upgraded transmission lines, and the integration of smart technologies. These initiatives are intended to improve efficiency and reduce disruptions across the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS), which supplies power to the majority of the population.
Tuesday’s meeting, officials indicated, is part of a continuing push to ensure that as infrastructure expands, systems are in place to respond effectively to emergencies and maintain stable electricity supply nationwide.
