Williams second in Tour of Trinidad and Tobago Independence Classic

GUYANA’S Geron Williams placed second overall in the just concluded Tour of Trinidad and Tobago Independence Classic Cycle Road Race.

Representing Team Foundation of the USA, Williams accumulated 42 points in the four-stage event which concluded on Sunday.
The overall race winner is veteran cyclist Emile Abraham of Trinidad and Tobago.
Williams, who is currently training and competing in the USA, placed third in the first stage which was won by Barbados’ Jason Perryman (Heat Wave). In stage two, the Guyanese cyclist finished second to Abraham.
He could have managed only an 11th place finish in the third stage but rode exceedingly well to win the final stage.
According to reports out of Trinidad, during the fourth stage, Williams’ team mate, Adam Alexander and Byron Anson of Trinidad broke away from the pack during the first 20km of the race and the two stayed together until the peloton which included Williams pulled them into the pack and with a mad dash for the finish line, it was Williams who had the winning flick to the line, just beating Barbados’ Jamol Eastman and his (Williams) team mate Joshua Alexander to the line.
However, with regard to the overall official results, there are conflicting reports about the race, especially after the first stage.
According to reports, during the first stage, Williams, Calixto Bello of the U.S., Jason Perryman of Barbados and Henner Rodel of Germany broke away from the bunch and opened a huge lead, and in the process they lapped Abraham who ended up fifth, but after the second stage which was won by Abraham from Williams, the officials had Abraham leading the event on the points table.
Williams’ next event will be the South American Junior Games which is set for Peru. He is also on Guyana’s team for a race in Suriname.
