OP driver on gun, ammo charges remanded

A DRIVER, attached to Office of the President (OP), was one of two men remanded to prison Thursday by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.

Kennard Jabar, of Lot 27 Norton Street, Georgetown, is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition but he pleaded not guilty to the two offences, allegedly committed, on Tuesday, September 3.
The allegations against him are that he had a 9mm pistol and four live matching rounds, on Brickdam, in the city, too, without being the lawful holder of licences.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, told the Court that ranks on mobile patrol observed the defendant driving motorcycle CJ 8212 without a safety helmet and stopped him.
A search of his person yielded the gun and bullets, the prosecutor said, as he successfully objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the crime, the penalty attached and that no special reason was given for the grant.
After Jabar was refused pre-trial liberty, the case was transferred to Magistrate Judy Latchman for report on September 18 and fixture.
The other prisoner sent on remand was Phillip Sealy, a porkknocker, of Lot 87 La Penitence Housing Scheme, in Georgetown, as well.
Indictable charge
The Administration of Justice Act (AJA) was applied to the indictable charge and the defendant pleaded not guilty to a break and enter charge.
He is charged with having, on Thursday, August 29, at Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, broken and entered the dwelling house of Cleon Thom  Fernandez and stole one Dell white laptop, one compact laptop and one black mini laptop, all valued $370,000.
Prosecutor Mangru said the owner had secured his home around 22:45 hrs and had gone to bed but awoke to find things missing.
After an investigation was launched, the defendant had been arrested for another but confessed to this offence and two of the laptops were recovered, the prosecutor said, adding to his objection to freedom for Sealy, as he may face other charges.
The case was transferred to Providence Court, on East Bank Demerara, too, for September 16.
