THE Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), present in nearly 50 countries worldwide, including Guyana, continues to play a pivotal role in helping member states transition to a low-carbon, green economy.
The GGGI provides policy advice, technical support, and capacity-building services, assisting countries in developing green growth plans, policies, and regulations. The organisation also mobilises green investments, implements sustainable projects, and facilitates knowledge sharing at the local level.
Regional Director for GGGI-Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), Ferruccio Santetti, highlighted the organisation’s mission during a recent project launch in Guyana. Established as an international organisation in 2012 at the RIO+20 Conference, GGGI is founded on the principle of green growth—an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable model of development that prioritises the well-being of people.

Santetti explained, “Our goal is to help our member countries, which include obviously Guyana, to promote the creation of equitable and green jobs, to promote access to essential services, and to overall improve the livelihoods of the population.”
In Guyana, GGGI works closely with the Government and national institutions to execute long-term sustainable development plans. Santetti emphasised that GGGI does not set the government agenda but supports the execution of government priorities.
A key focus of GGGI is mobilising finance for green projects, ensuring that resources reach the country level. Specialised in designing and structuring innovative financial instruments, the organisation has helped member states secure over $15 billion to support long-term sustainability goals.
Across Latin America and the Caribbean, GGGI has over 60 active projects. In Guyana, five projects are currently underway: Strategic Management Support for the Guyana-Norway Portfolio; Strengthening and Enhancing Capacities of Guyana’s Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification System (MRVS); Coastal Resilience Project in Guyana; Sustainable Integrated D&I Systems in Guyana; and the recently launched Driving Greater Climate Finance Uptake Through Improved Frameworks, Methods, Capacity and Enhanced Awareness of Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES).
GGGI-Guyana Project Manager, Hansrajie Sukhdeo, disclosed that a sixth project will soon be signed, focusing on establishing a national MRB system that integrates various sectors, including forestry, agriculture, energy, and waste management.
“We are committed to supporting Guyana in its green growth journey, ensuring that sustainable development projects are not only planned but fully funded and implemented effectively,” Sukhdeo added.
