TWO young men from Bon Fim, Brazil were also refused bail on Tuesday, when they appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman to answer a narcotic charge.
Through an interpreter, 19-year-old, Poniro Lucas Da Silva and Jumetoo Tiang Da Silva De Souza, 20, both pleaded not guilty to the joint allegation that, on Saturday, July 13, at Takutu Bridge, Central Rupununi, they had 468 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking.
Police Sergeant, Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, said it was about 20:00 hrs when ranks on patrol along the bridge saw the defendants about to cross to Bon Fim on a pedal cycle.
The prosecutor said a search was conducted on them and they were found with three parcels, containing seeds and stems of the prohibited plant which they said they were taking to Brazil for payment.
Upholding the objection to pre-trial freedom for the duo, on the grounds of the seriousness of the crime and the likelihood of the defendants absconding, Magistrate Latchman transferred the case to Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, who, yesterday, made another transfer, to Lethem Court, Rupununi, for September 3.
